Known as the premium cold-rolled product, battery steel is a kind of high-tech, high value-added, high-quality precision cold-rolled strip. Currently only Baosteel is able to produce battery steel in China. Since putting into market by the end of 2004, its market share has reached 33%. In recent years, the rapid development of domestic battery industry puts forward higher requirements on the production material. Thinned battery steel with excellent appearance and quality has become the development trend. Compared to conventional battery steel, the thickness of new high-end battery steel is usually 0.25 mm and punching speed is raised to130-150 per minute. In order to reduce "breaking and wire drawing" in the high-speed punching process, high-end battery steel has very strict requirements on manufacturing process control level and marketing and after-sales service. The acquisition of the variety production and supply capacity shows that the steel enterprise's technique has reached international advanced level. Before 2011, all this new material battery steel used by domestic battery manufacturer is purchased from abroad. In order to break the monopoly of foreign steel enterprises, Baosteel battery steel production, marketing and research team starts research and development of the new steel variety on the basis of existent technique. Team members overcome a series of problems such as steel purity rate, sheet thickness and precision control and carry out a series of attempts in process control and management. The product's mechanical performance equals foreign manufacturers' material. Marketing personnel emphasize customer tracking and early intervention. As for problems occurred during users' application, the team and some of the users set up a joint research platform and technical cooperation platform to guide the users in material selection.

Due to the good property/price ratio and after-sales service, Baosteel's new high-end battery steel has replaced imports in well-known industry enterprises such as Shanghai Jinyang, Ningbo Guanghua last year and there is steady improvement in the amount of application. This year, production, marketing and research team will further exploration in finished product rate and stability improvement.
